The Welcome of a Front Door

The front door of any building provides an opportunity to make a welcoming statement. Whether it be the design, the color, and/or adjacent elements, this area is the first introduction to and hint of what lies within.

In Paris, where I visit often, most doors are painted blue, various blues, but blue blue blue – everywhere! This has a long historical and symbolic context, originally signifying wealth or royalty, but today representing a strong tie to tradition and a personal contribution to the city’s distinctive style. Where there’s a non-blue entry door in Paris, one feels out of place.

During my recent visit to The Cotswolds in England, I was struck by the personalities of many of the front doors in this rural haven. This prompted my thinking about the front doors of some of the buildings I have seen over the years, some in foreign countries, some located in homes I have designed and built.

In The Cotswolds, this red door provides a lively contrast to the surrounding stone.

A close up of its door knocker reveals the face and crown of Queen Elizabeth I, who reigned from 1558-1603. The nearby buildings are dated from 1568, so I assume this door knocker was a tribute to the ruling monarch.
Also in The Cotswolds, this restrained and elegant grey door with arched transom is enhanced by the wall lights and flanking planters.
This simple door with nearby greenery and flowers includes a low barrier perhaps to restrain a pet. The verticality of the barrier harmonizes with the vertical detailing of the door – a happy coincidence or a deftly planned design detail.
Here in Chapel Hill, our client’s modern aesthetic is perfectly expressed by her front door.
And these Chapel Hill clients’ Craftsman style home, replete with art and treasures collected over many years, provides a pop of warm purple welcome.
And finally, the warm and clean lines of this recently-occupied Zinn home begin with the front door, railing, black concrete steps and lighted stair risers.
Our wonderful clients come to us with various directions for their new homes, for their remodels and additions. Each one presents an exciting and stimulating journey for me, whether it be traditional or contemporary or somewhere in between. And you can be sure that the front door will reflect our clients’ style and taste.
