Luxury Laundries

Clients are showing heightened interest in creating upscale laundry rooms. This might include the use of inventive new laundry accessories for increased functionality, and it might manifest in beautiful cabinetry, lighting and ceramic tile to make the chore of laundry more enjoyable. Clearly, laundry rooms are becoming more important than in the past.

Some of our new home laundry rooms are on the upper level, close to most of the bedrooms, and some are on the main level near the kitchen. Our clients seem to have no distinct preference.

Often laundry rooms are combined with a mudroom area to become a mud-laundry space. Usually just off a garage or side entrance, this space provides a landing spot from the outside world for the family, together with washer dryer facilities.

I am working now with a wonderful couple, long term Chapel Hill residents, for whom we are about to begin a substantial addition and remodel. As part of this transformative project, their existing mud-laundry room will be slightly enlarged. The room will be updated with beautifully patterned ceramic floor tile and functional lighting both at the ceiling and under the cabinets for tasks. Elegant cabinetry will be used. We are creating an adjacent side door entryway for friends and family, connecting the family room with the laundry. This entry will have Shaker style paneling and attractive wall sconces, to create a warm and elegant welcome. The entry hall accesses the laundry through a convenient pocket door.

Last year we completed a major laundry room remodel for a repeat client, going from the top image here (white) to the bottom (blue and gray).

The custom cabinets are not only beautiful, but full of custom details like built-in drying racks, drawers below the washer and dryer for laundry baskets, a built-in ironing board, and special storage for the clothing steamer. These changes have not only helped make the client’s mundane tasks more pleasant, but also provided a glamorous uplift to the space.

While it doesn’t make financial sense to do a laundry transformation on its own, it is well worth doing when it is part of a larger remodel project. Zinn Design Build is seeing many of these opportunities, as Chapel Hill homeowners seek to update their tired homes. We are very pleased to help!
